Audi has unveiled the first European example of the Volkswagen Group's new parallel plug-in hybrid system in its Audi A3 e-tron model, which goes on sale this year and will make its debut at the 2013 Geneva motor show on March 5. A VW Golf plug-in hybrid will follow in 2015.
This plug-in version of Audi's popular family hatchback uses a 148bhp/184lb ft, 1.4-litre TSI turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a 75kW/243lb ft Volkswagen manufactured electric motor. This combination gives the A3 e-tron a top speed of 138mph, 0-62mph acceleration in 7.6sec, an EU Combined fuel consumption figure of 188.3mpg and carbon dioxide emissions of 35g/km.
"This car has a lot of our effort, technology and know-how in it," said Wolfgang Durheimer, Audi board member. "We are convinced that the plug-in hybrid is the best technology for the next few years."
The plug-in hybrid driveline has been specially built to work with VW's MQB common architecture and is already available in the Mexican-built Jetta in the US. Total system power is 201bhp, torque is 258lb ft and maximum range is 31 miles using battery power alone and 416 miles using petrol and battery power.
The battery is a 8.8kWh Sanyo lithium-ion unit weighing 258lb and displacing 140 litres, which sits under the rear seats and takes three hours to charge using a household supply. The conventional 12-volt service battery is under the boot floor, while the engine, six-speed double-clutch transmission, power electronics, electronic air-conditioning and brake servo units are under the bonnet.
